Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor)
Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) are among the most widely used feeder insects for pet owners. High in protein and energy, they are suitable for many reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, poultry, and small insectivorous mammals. Easy to raise, store, and distribute, they represent a practical and nutritious food source.

Nutritional qualities
Mealworms provide protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. They support growth and vitality, but due to their chitinous shell and relatively high fat content, they should be offered as part of a varied and balanced diet.

Stimulation and enrichment
Less active than crickets or superworms, they still attract the attention of animals. Offered in a dish or scattered in the enclosure, they encourage natural foraging and stimulate hunting behavior.

Ease of handling
Very easy to handle, they do not jump and remain still in a container. They keep for several weeks in the refrigerator (4–8 °C), which slows down their metabolism and extends their lifespan.

Care
Low-maintenance, they thrive in a substrate of bran or wheat flour, fed with vegetables and fruits to keep them fresh and nutritious.

Here are some examples of animals that eat mealworms:

  • Lizards (e.g., geckos, anoles)
  • Amphibians (e.g., frogs, salamanders)
  • Birds (e.g., chickadees, mynahs, parrots)
  • Poultry (e.g., chickens, quail)
  • Small insectivorous mammals (e.g., hedgehogs, mice)
  • Carnivorous fish (e.g., cichlids)
  • Spiders and arthropods (e.g., tarantulas, scorpions)

Comparison with superworms
Mealworms: smaller, economical, easy to handle and store refrigerated. Ideal for regular feeding.
Superworms: larger and more active, better at stimulating hunting instincts and higher in protein, but also fattier, so best offered in moderation.
